Dental Filling Replacements in Hudson: Understanding Dental Restoration Lifespan

Most of the patients we see at Hudson Family Dental have fillings, implants, a bridge or missing teeth. You will probably need to repair or replace most of these restorations at some point. Even with high-quality dental work, the truth is that most restorations are not designed to last forever. Sometimes, replacement is necessary for oral health. At other times, restorations are for aesthetic rather than health-related reasons.

Here are two questions we often hear from our patients: First, when do I need a replacement? Second, what should I do if you recommend a replacement, but it’s not necessary?

At Hudson Family Dental, we understand this may not always be an easy decision. Our patients have varied concerns and circumstances. It’s our job to help you make that decision based on dental needs, as well as your situation and preferences.

Read on to learn more about dental restorations and the key factors we use to create a tailored plan that’s right for you.

Dental fillings: The most common restoration treatment

Dental filling replacement is our most common restoration. A filling typically lasts about 10 or sometimes as long as 20 years, depending on the material used. You would naturally call our practice if you were in pain or lost a filling. Our staff would schedule an emergency appointment. Even without pain, we would want you to come in if you notice changes such as a crack, a darkened tooth or sensitivity.

If you need a filling, we’ll make recommendations on numerous factors. These include your exam results, the tooth’s location, dental filling longevity, aesthetics, sensitivities, cost, and personal preferences.

On the other hand, an exam may show that you may not be at risk for a cavity. For example, a darkened tooth may be stained from coffee. We would discuss options such as tooth whitening, veneers or just leaving it alone (You can change your mind later).

Durable crowns and when to replace them

After about ten to 15 years, or following an injury to your mouth, your crowns can wear out, erode, crack, or become loose. We can often repair minor damage with composite resin bonding. If your crown is loose or has fallen off but remains intact, we can usually recement it.

However, we may need to replace your crown, including same-day crown options, if it is loose, damaged, causes pain or shows significant wear and tear. If you are unsure about replacing it, we will explain the risks, including:

  • Pain or discomfort when the situation worsens
  • Severe decay, infection or an abscess, possibly leading to a root canal or extraction
  • Fractured or shifting teeth
  • Chronic gum irritation

Restoration, repair and lifespan of dentures

Our patients with dentures typically have to replace them after seven to 10 years. Partials may last longer, and implant-supported dentures often last 10 to 25 years. Sometimes, we can quickly repair cracked, chipped or broken dentures. However, contact us immediately if your dentures are loose, painful, discolored, poorly functioning or showing general wear-and-tear.

If we can’t repair your dentures, you should have us replace them to avoid future pain, bone loss, poor diet and further damage. In addition, delaying repairs and replacement may be more expensive in the long run or lead to more complex treatments.

Implants and the risk of not replacing them

With the right care, your permanent dental implants can last a lifetime. If they chip or crack, we can sometimes repair them with composite materials for a natural look. At the same time, if they are near the end of their lifespan or repairs aren’t possible, we typically recommend replacement for these reasons:

  • Severe Damage: The implant is broken or has failed due to infection, dental trauma, or other complications.
  • Advanced Wear: The implant has worn down significantly over time, affecting its function.
  • Improved Technology: Newer implants offer better aesthetics or functionality than older implant technology.

If your implant fails, not replacing it can lead to severe, long-term oral health issues. These may include jawbone loss, chronic infection, shifting teeth, loss of function, and difficult future treatments.

Common concerns we hear about implant replacement:

Although not replacing this type of dental restoration or delaying it can have serious consequences, it may still be a difficult decision. We are sensitive to these common thoughts and concerns we hear from our patients:

  • The gap isn’t visible when you smile or talk.
  • You don’t face an immediate health risk.
  • Functionality, such as chewing and speaking, won’t be impaired.
  • Implant replacement is expensive, and it’s not covered by insurance.
  • It’s complicated and time-consuming

We care about your wellbeing and understand that everyone’s situation is different. Although you may choose not to replace your implant now, it’s crucial to schedule regular appointments so we can monitor the situation.

Dental bridges as a non-invasive option

If you are missing one to three consecutive teeth, we may recommend a dental bridge. We may also suggest them when adjacent teeth need crowns, you lack sufficient jawbone for implants, or if you want a non-surgical option. You can expect them to last approximately 15 years.

We may be able to repair your bridge if it has minor chips or becomes loose. However, you will need a replacement if your teeth, gums or jawbones are damaged, or if the materials have degraded.

When we recommend a bridge, we’ll explain the risks of not replacing it. Specifically, it can lead to severe oral health issues, including decay, infection, gum disease, misalignment or bone loss. The gap may also cause misalignment, jaw pain (TMJ), bone loss or facial structural changes.
